It is known that omega-3 fatty acids play a role in the cardiovascular, pulmonary, immune and endocrine systems. The three most commonly studied types are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Omega-3 fatty acids have been suggested to lower blood pressure. Reduce triglycerides; slow down the development of plaque in the arteries; and reduce the risk of arrhythmia, heart attack and stroke. However, recent studies have shown conflicting evidence, particularly regarding cardiovascular event rates.
