Following a clinical study, Ohio State University researchers found that high daily doses of omega-3 supplements can help mitigate the effects of aging. It does this by fighting damage and improving protection at the cellular level during and after a stressful event.
A daily supplement containing 2.5 grams of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids – the highest dose that was aminated – was best for helping the body withstand the harmful effects of stress. In fact, participants taking omega-3 supplements produced less cortisol – the stress hormone – and lower levels of pro-inflammatory protein than those taking the placebo during a lab wear and tear event. While a large decrease in protective compounds was seen in those in the placebo group, no such decrease was seen in those taking omega-3s.
This shows that dietary supplements contributed to the ability to withstand stress, which includes reducing damage during and after acute stress, protecting cellular components that are shrinking with aging, and maintaining anti-inflammatory activity.
Meanwhile, the potential antiaging effects of dietary supplements have been seen as particularly noticeable. This is because they occur in people who are healthy, but also overweight, sedentary, and middle-aged – the bundle that can lead to a higher risk of accelerated aging.
“Plus, omega-3 supplementation is a relatively simple change people can make that has a positive effect on breaking the sequence between stress and negative health effects,” said the study’s lead author.
The study was published on April 19 in the journal Molecular Psychiatry. The paper on the study is a secondary analysis of previous studies showing that omega-3 supplements alter the ratio of fatty acid consumption in such a way that tiny segments of DNA are retained in white blood cells.
