According to a new study published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry, taking an omega-3 supplement can slow the aging process. Ohio State University researchers used 138 participants between the ages of 40 and 85 who were at high risk of accelerated aging because they were “sedentary, overweight, [and] Middle age. “Participants then took either 2.5 grams or 1.25 grams of omega-3 fatty acids per day, plus a group that received a placebo, which is a typical daily intake.

After four months, the team then ran a 20-minute math subtraction and speech test that was shown to induce an inflammatory stress response. The results showed that participants given the higher dose of omega-3 showed less stress damage to their body than the placebo group, with 19 percent lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol and 33 percent lower levels of a pro-inflammatory protein.


The researchers concluded that their results showed a direct link between higher omega-3 doses and the ability to withstand stress, and found that patients did not report any side effects from the increased dose. They believe the supplement can help the body fight off the harmful effects of stress at the cellular level by protecting parts of the cell that typically shrink due to aging.

But it wasn’t just an aging slowdown that omega-3s could affect. The researchers also found that reducing the stress-related inflammation caused by the supplement could help reduce the likelihood that some people who experience repeated stress will develop depressive symptoms.

“Not everyone who is depressed has increased inflammation – around a third. This explains why omega-3 supplementation does not always lead to a reduction in depressive symptoms.” Janice Kiecolt-Glaser, PhD, professor of psychiatry and psychology and director of the Institute for Behavioral Medicine Research in the state of Ohio, said in a statement. “Unless you have increased inflammation, omega-3s may not be particularly helpful. But for people with depression who do, our results suggest that omega-3s would be more useful.”

This isn’t the first study linking omega-3s to age-related benefits. A study published in 2018 in the BMJ tracked 2,622 adults with a mean age of 74 years from 1992 and 2015 to determine whether they developed chronic illnesses or other mental or physical ailments.

After the researchers measured the levels of certain omega-3 oils in participants’ blood samples, the results found that those in the top fifth of high omega-3 levels showed 18 percent fewer signs of unhealthy aging, The New York Times reports . “In our study, we found that adults with higher levels of seafood omega-3s were more likely to lead longer, healthier lives.
